This year, the rider turning the most heads of all the foreign competitors was Antonio Cairoli, an Italian racer who was unbelievably fast throughout the day. After a near holeshot in the first MX2 outing, a first-lap crash relegated Cairoli to tenth in moto one, though he charged from nearly last place to get there. In moto two (MX2/Open), Cairoli was even faster, working his way from fifth all the way to first, where he would remain at the checkers. In the process of making his way to the front of the pack, Cairoli passed some heavy hitters, including Ivan Tedesco (who was aboard a 450cc machine), Ben Townley, Ryan Villopoto, and recently crowned 2006 MX2 World Champion Christohe Pourcel. After his impressive MXoN ride, and considering the rush by factories to sign up the latest and greatest talent for the future (exemplified by freshman factory riders Ryan Dungee and Josh Hill, of late), we wouldn‘t be surprised to see Cairoli’s face in the American pits soon.
Don't be surprised if you see Italy's Antonio Cairoli racing stateside soon.
