The Olympic Games:
Today, the Olympic Game sis the most popular sport event in the world. Actually, this important competition gathers an incredible number of athletes and spectators every two years in even-numbered years. For example, there were 11000 participants in the summer Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing. But, what is the story of Olympic Games?
In the first place, the ancient Olympic Games begun in Greece at Olympia in -776. The games took place in the valley of Olympia. In the sanctuary of Olympia, the Greeks erected a lot of statues and they built a temple to honor the supreme God, Zeus. In fact, the Olympic Games took place to honor Zeus. In Olympia, the Greeks built also sport infrastructures: a stadium, a racetrack and a gymnasium. Moreover, these Games lasted five days and were held every four years during the summer. Only the Greek man could take part in the ancient Olympic Games. Consequently, the woman couldn’t take part and attend in these Games. And the competitions took place only in the Olympic stadium and in the racetrack. On the one hand, there were a lot of horse shows and on the other hand, there were athletic events during these Games. And the ancient Olympic Games took place at Olympia during most of 1000 years. The winners won a sacred olive and became important people.
But, in 146, the Romans gained control of Greece and in 393, the roman Emperor Theodosius I abolished the Olympic Games. This Emperor decided to prohibit the worship of Zeus and he ordered the destruction of the sanctuary of Olympia
In the 19th century, a lot of people tried to revise these Games. But, it was a Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who succeeded to restore the Olympic Games. In 1894, Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee in Paris. Coubertin wanted to revive Olympic Games. In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens. Moreover, he created the Olympic Movement. The purpose of this Movement is: to link sport with education, to promote the practice of the sport and to help to build a better world. In 1924, when the winter sports were very popular, Coubertin decided to create Olympic Winter Games. The Summer Games and Winter Games originally took place in the same year every four. But since 1992, the Summer Games have been held two years from the Winter Games.
Now, the Olympic Games program consists of 26 sports. The program evolves with each edition. And, the best nation in the Olympic competitions is the U.S.A. The American won more of 5000 medals. For
example, the Belgium won only 144 medals since 1896.
